Since I was a small child, I feel like I’ve been a sh*t magnet forever!
Drama seems to be my second name. Even at work, my woes are shared with my loyal clients, who seem to revel in my crazy stories! Yes, I am that oversharing hairstylist, who, no matter how hard I try to redirect the “what’s going on in your life Vicki” back to my clients, I always get answered with “Oh, Vicki, your life is so much more interesting than mine, please tell me what’s going on in yours”. Then off I go again, explaining the latest shenanigans, which, dare I say, involve most likely my love life, my sexuality (yes, I’m an out-and-proud lesbian) and sex talk. Sex has always been my second passion, after hair. In fact, I can clearly state that maybe I’m fanatical about sex and all its glory! I read books, listen to podcasts and take courses after courses on sex related subjects. I would say when my hairdressing career comes to an end, which, let’s face it, without a pension and my terrible spending habits, I’m doomed and will have to work well into my eighties! So I’d best have a job where I don’t need to stand on my feet all day. Working as a sex therapist means less time on my feet and still being able to earn a few pennies!
Anyway, I digress. That happens a lot, as I have been recently diagnosed with severe ADHD, so please excuse me if I go off on a tangent.
Right back to the INSPIRATION behind my book… Well, let’s say I can blame my lovely mother for this one!
My mum has always kept up with my stories of ‘out of the closet and into the chair’ and told me I should write about everything that has happened to me and what goes on in my salon. “Not only would this be great therapy for you”, she said, “but it may also help others in your situation and would be a great spicy but valid read”. From vibrators to self-discovery, this book memoir is full of it!
So three years later, with the help of my mentor, book publisher Jordan Martin at ‘Olde to Stories’, and, of course, my mum, Lorraine Lucas, with her creative input and exceptional photography skills, Let’s talk… sex, cuts and blow-dries with Vicki Lord was published.
